Nat King Cole
Born March 17, 1919
American jazz pianist and singer whose smooth voice made hits of Unforgettable, Mona Lisa, and The Christmas Song.
Nat King Cole was born Nathaniel Adams Coles in Montgomery, Alabama, and moved with his family to Chicago as a young child. He started piano lessons around age four and chose jazz over classical music. With guitarist Oscar Moore and bassist Wesley Prince he formed the King Cole Trio, and the 1943 hit Straighten Up and Fly Right led to a contract with Capitol Records. Cole then became one of the leading pop singers of his era, with songs such as The Christmas Song, Mona Lisa, Too Young, and Unforgettable. In 1956 he became the first African American artist to host his own network TV show, on NBC. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000.
