Andrew Jackson
Born March 15, 1767
Seventh president of the United States, a War of 1812 general known as Old Hickory and a founder of the Democratic Party.
Andrew Jackson was the seventh president of the United States, serving from 1829 to 1837. He was born in the Waxhaws settlement on the border of North and South Carolina and lost his parents at a young age. After studying law, he moved to Nashville, Tennessee, and served the state in the U.S. House and Senate. As a general in the War of 1812, he led American forces to victory at the Battle of New Orleans in January 1815, which made him a national hero and earned him the nickname Old Hickory. As president he helped build the Democratic Party, vetoed the renewal of the Second Bank of the United States, and signed the Indian Removal Act of 1830. He later retired to the Hermitage, his plantation near Nashville.
