Jane Austen
Born December 16, 1775
English novelist whose witty stories of everyday life, including Pride and Prejudice and Emma, remain beloved classics.
Jane Austen was an English novelist born at the rectory in Steventon, Hampshire, where her father was the local clergyman. She was the seventh child in her family and was especially close to her sister, Cassandra. After moving to the village of Chawton in 1809, she had time to focus on writing, revising earlier drafts and composing new books. Her novels, first published without her name, include Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park, Emma, Northanger Abbey, and Persuasion. Austen wrote about ordinary people, courtship, and family life with sharp humor, helping shape the modern novel. More than two centuries later, her books remain popular classics.

Margaret Mead
Born December 16, 1901
American anthropologist known for Coming of Age in Samoa and her influential public voice on culture and society.
Margaret Mead was an American anthropologist born in Philadelphia. She graduated from Barnard College and earned a Ph.D. in anthropology from Columbia University. Her fieldwork in Samoa led to Coming of Age in Samoa (1928), a bestseller about how young people grow up in another culture. She went on to study societies in New Guinea and wrote books such as Growing Up in New Guinea and Male and Female, arguing that many differences between people come from culture rather than heredity. Mead worked at the American Museum of Natural History for decades, starting in 1926. Her frank opinions made her a well-known public figure, and she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1979.

Born December 16, 1917
British science fiction writer who co-created 2001: A Space Odyssey and foresaw communications satellites.
Arthur C. Clarke was a British science fiction author born in Minehead, Somerset, England. During World War II he served as a Royal Air Force radar technician. In a 1945 magazine article, he described how satellites in fixed orbits could relay radio and TV signals around the world, an idea that later became reality. Clarke wrote popular novels including Childhood's End, Rendezvous with Rama, and The Fountains of Paradise. He worked with director Stanley Kubrick to create 2001: A Space Odyssey, released as both a film and a novel in 1968, and the two shared an Academy Award nomination for the screenplay. Clarke moved to Sri Lanka in 1956, enjoyed scuba diving there, and was knighted in 2000.
