What happened in 1944?

In 1944, the Japanese garrison on the Pacific island of Saipan was wiped out, and kamikaze suicide attacks by Japanese pilots began in earnest. In Europe, the Allies carried out the Normandy landings, and Paris was liberated from German occupation.
