Born June 4, 1738
British king from 1760 to 1820 whose long reign included the American Revolution.
George III was born in London, the son of Frederick, Prince of Wales. He became king in 1760 at age 22 and married Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz the next year; the couple had 15 children, including the future George IV. His reign of about 60 years was one of the longest in British history. Early in his rule, Parliament's taxes on the American colonies, such as the Stamp Act, stirred strong resistance, leading to the American Revolution and U.S. independence in 1783. He later worked closely with Prime Minister William Pitt the Younger. In 1801 he became the first king of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. He loved science and farming, earning the nickname Farmer George, and founded the Royal Academy of Arts.
