Born June 7, 1848
French Post-Impressionist painter famous for bold, colorful works made in Brittany and Tahiti.
Paul Gauguin was a French painter born in Paris who spent part of his childhood in Peru. He first worked as a stockbroker and also took part in the Impressionist exhibitions. In 1883 he left business to focus fully on art. In Brittany he led the Pont-Aven group and helped develop Synthetism, a style that stressed symbols and feelings over exact copying of nature. Works such as Vision of the Sermon (1888) and The Yellow Christ (1889) used flat shapes and strong color. In 1891 he moved to Tahiti, where he made many of his best-known paintings, including Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going? His ideas later influenced Picasso and Matisse.
