Thomas Mann
Born June 6, 1875
German novelist who wrote Buddenbrooks and The Magic Mountain and won the 1929 Nobel Prize in Literature.
Thomas Mann was a German novelist born in Lübeck, Germany. His family expected him to run their grain business, but he followed his older brother Heinrich into writing. His first novel, Buddenbrooks (1901), tells of a merchant family slowly falling apart. He went on to write the novella Death in Venice and the major novel The Magic Mountain (1924). In 1929 he received the Nobel Prize in Literature, mainly honored for Buddenbrooks. Mann spoke out against Nazism and left Germany, moving to the United States in 1938. His later works included the Joseph and His Brothers series and Doctor Faustus. He was known for writing that mixed deep ideas with humor and irony.

Björn Borg

Swedish tennis star who won five straight Wimbledon titles and six French Open championships.
Björn Borg is a Swedish tennis player who ruled the sport in the late 1970s. He began playing as a boy and turned professional at just 14. He won the French Open at 18 and went on to win it six times in all. At Wimbledon he captured five titles in a row, from 1976 through 1980. In total he won 11 Grand Slam singles titles, and he also led Sweden to its first Davis Cup win in 1975. Nicknamed "The Ice Man" for his calm on court, he was known for his heavy topspin and two-handed backhand. He reached world No. 1 in 1977, retired in 1983, entered the Hall of Fame in 1987, and later founded a sportswear company.

Paul Giamatti is an American actor from New Haven, Connecticut, who studied at Yale University. He is known for playing likable, quirky everyday characters. He drew wide notice for the films American Splendor (2003) and Sideways (2004), and he also appeared in Cinderella Man (2005). He took the title role in the HBO miniseries John Adams (2008), which won him an Emmy Award, and he received Golden Globe recognition as well. He later won praise for Barney's Version and starred in the TV drama Billions. His performance in The Holdovers (2023) earned him an Academy Award nomination. Along with film and television work, he continues to act on stage.
