John Maynard Keynes
Born June 5, 1883
British economist whose ideas about government spending and employment reshaped twentieth-century economic policy.
John Maynard Keynes was a British economist from Cambridge, England. He studied mathematics at King's College, Cambridge, and later taught economics there. He worked for the British Treasury during both World Wars and advised Britain at the 1919 peace talks in Versailles. His book The Economic Consequences of the Peace attacked the heavy payments demanded from Germany after World War I. In The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money, published in the mid-1930s, he argued that governments could fight depressions by encouraging investment or by spending on public works. These ideas, known as Keynesian economics, influenced the New Deal. He also helped plan the postwar financial system at the 1944 Bretton Woods Conference and belonged to the Bloomsbury Group.
