Allen Ginsberg
Born June 3, 1926
American poet whose Howl made him a leading voice of the Beat Generation.
Allen Ginsberg was born in Newark, New Jersey, and studied at Columbia University, where he became friends with Jack Kerouac and William S. Burroughs. In 1955 he first read his long poem Howl aloud at a San Francisco gallery, an event often seen as the start of the Beat Generation. City Lights published Howl and Other Poems in 1956, and the book was later cleared in an obscenity trial, making Ginsberg a symbol of free expression. His later books include Kaddish and Other Poems and The Fall of America, which won the National Book Award. He was active in the antiwar movement, practiced Buddhism, and helped found the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at Naropa in Colorado.
