Martha Washington
Born June 2, 1731
Wife of George Washington and the first first lady of the United States, who set early social customs for the role.
Martha Washington grew up on a plantation in New Kent County, Virginia, the oldest of eight children. Her first husband, Daniel Parke Custis, was a wealthy planter, and the couple had four children. In 1759 she married Colonel George Washington and moved to his Mount Vernon estate. During the Revolutionary War she traveled each winter to the army's camps, including Valley Forge and Morristown, often staying for months. When Washington became the first president in 1789, she hosted public receptions in New York and later Philadelphia, including a weekly Friday evening gathering for lawmakers and guests. These events helped shape the role of future first ladies. After the presidency she returned to Mount Vernon.
