American actress and lasting cultural icon who starred in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, The Seven Year Itch, and Some Like It Hot.
Marilyn Monroe was an American actress born Norma Jeane Mortenson in Los Angeles, California. She grew up in a series of foster homes. While she was working in a factory during World War II, a photographer spotted her, and she began a modeling career. After signing with 20th Century Fox, she took the name Marilyn Monroe and dyed her hair blonde. Small parts in The Asphalt Jungle and All About Eve (both 1950) led to stardom in 1953 with Niagara, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, and How to Marry a Millionaire. She later studied at the Actors Studio and won praise for Bus Stop and Some Like It Hot. Her mix of glamour and vulnerability made her a lasting American cultural icon.

Born June 1, 1940
American physicist who shared the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics for his key role in detecting gravitational waves with LIGO.
Kip Thorne is an American theoretical physicist born in Logan, Utah. He earned his PhD at Princeton University in 1965 and joined the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) the following year. His research covers black holes, general relativity, and gravitational waves, the tiny ripples in space and time predicted by Einstein. Thorne played a major part in developing LIGO, a laser-based observatory built to measure these ripples. In 2015 LIGO made the first direct detection of gravitational waves. For this work, Thorne shared the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics with Rainer Weiss and Barry Barish.
