Walt Whitman
Born May 31, 1819
American poet whose free-verse collection Leaves of Grass made him one of the most important voices in American literature.
Walt Whitman was an American poet born in West Hills, on Long Island, New York. Before becoming famous, he worked as a printer, taught in small country schools, and edited newspapers such as the Brooklyn Daily Eagle. In 1855 he published Leaves of Grass on his own, and he kept revising and expanding it for the rest of his life. Its open, unrhymed free verse broke away from traditional poetry and impressed Ralph Waldo Emerson. Famous poems include "Song of Myself," "I Sing the Body Electric," and "O Captain! My Captain!" During the Civil War, Whitman moved to Washington, D.C., and spent years visiting and caring for wounded soldiers in hospitals. He is ranked with Emily Dickinson among America's most important poets.
