What happened in the 1950s?
In the 1950s (1950–1959), the Korean War broke out, and Japan signed the San Francisco Peace Treaty and joined the United Nations. The Soviet launch of Sputnik 1 set off the U.S.–Soviet space race in earnest, and the decade also saw the founding of the European Economic Community and the Cuban Revolution.
