Anton Chekhov
Born January 29, 1860
Russian playwright and short-story master known for The Seagull, Uncle Vanya, Three Sisters, and The Cherry Orchard.
Anton Chekhov was a Russian playwright and short-story writer from the port town of Taganrog. He studied medicine at Moscow University and supported his family by writing humorous sketches for magazines, and he kept practicing as a doctor even after he became famous. He went on to write short stories such as "The Steppe" and "The Black Monk," and he is regarded as one of the great masters of the form. His major plays include The Seagull, Uncle Vanya, Three Sisters, and The Cherry Orchard. After The Seagull failed at first, the Moscow Art Theatre revived it with great success, and his later plays premiered there. He is regarded as a leading figure of late 19th-century Russian realism.
