Jackson Pollock
Born January 28, 1912
American painter and leading Abstract Expressionist famous for his drip technique of pouring paint onto canvas.
Jackson Pollock was an American painter born in Cody, Wyoming. At 18 he moved to New York City, where he studied with Thomas Hart Benton at the Art Students League, and during the Great Depression he worked for the WPA's mural program. He married artist Lee Krasner in 1945, and with help from patron Peggy Guggenheim the couple bought a farmhouse in Springs, near East Hampton, New York. There he developed his famous drip method, laying canvases on the floor and letting paint pour onto them. A 1949 Life magazine article made him nationally known. A leading figure of Abstract Expressionism, he is remembered for works such as Autumn Rhythm and Blue Poles.
