Franz Schubert
Born January 31, 1797
Austrian composer who linked the Classical and Romantic eras, famed for his songs, Unfinished Symphony, and Winterreise.
Franz Schubert was an Austrian composer born in Himmelpfortgrund, near Vienna. As a boy he sang in the imperial court chapel choir and studied with the composer Antonio Salieri. He taught at his father's school for a time before devoting himself fully to music. Although his career was short, he was extremely productive, writing more than 500 vocal works and helping to establish the German art song, or Lied. His best-known pieces include the songs "Erlkönig" and "Gretchen am Spinnrade," the song cycles Die schöne Müllerin and Winterreise, the "Unfinished" and "Great" C major symphonies, and the Trout Quintet. Friends gathered in Viennese homes for evenings of his music called Schubertiades.
