Felix Mendelssohn
Born February 3, 1809
German Romantic composer, pianist, and conductor known for A Midsummer Night's Dream and the oratorio Elijah.
Felix Mendelssohn was a German composer, pianist, and conductor born in Hamburg and a grandson of the philosopher Moses Mendelssohn. A child prodigy, he performed as a pianist in 1818 and wrote his famous overture to A Midsummer Night's Dream while still a teenager. In 1829 he conducted Bach's St. Matthew Passion in Berlin, helping spark new interest in Bach's music. He became conductor of the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig in 1835 and founded the Leipzig Conservatory in 1843. His works include the Scottish and Italian symphonies, a much-loved violin concerto, the oratorios St. Paul and Elijah, and the piano pieces called Songs Without Words. His music joined Classical forms with early Romantic feeling.

Gertrude Stein
Born February 3, 1874
American writer and art collector whose Paris salon drew modernist painters and writers; author of The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas.
Gertrude Stein was an American writer and art collector born in Allegheny, Pennsylvania. She studied psychology with William James at Radcliffe College and later attended Johns Hopkins Medical School. In 1903 she moved to Paris, where her home at 27 rue de Fleurus became a famous salon for artists and writers. She was an early supporter of painters such as Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse, and she welcomed American authors including Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald. Stein is credited with the phrase "the Lost Generation" for these expatriates. Her books include Three Lives (1909), Tender Buttons (1914), and The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas (1933), named for her lifelong companion. She also wrote opera librettos with Virgil Thomson.
