Robert Burns
Born January 25, 1759
Scottish poet and songwriter, the national poet of Scotland, who wrote the words of Auld Lang Syne.
Robert Burns was born in Alloway, Scotland, the son of a tenant farmer who taught his children at home. His first book, Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect (1786), known as the Kilmarnock edition, was an instant hit and made him famous across Scotland and England as a "peasant-poet." He wrote in both Scots and English. His best-loved works include the poems "To a Mouse" and "Tam o' Shanter" and the songs "A Red, Red Rose" and "Auld Lang Syne." From 1788 he worked as an excise officer while helping James Johnson with The Scots Musical Museum, collecting and reworking hundreds of traditional folk songs. He is honored today as Scotland's national poet.

Virginia Woolf
Born January 25, 1882
English modernist writer of Mrs. Dalloway and To the Lighthouse and author of the essay A Room of One's Own.
Virginia Woolf, born Virginia Stephen in London, was the daughter of the writer Leslie Stephen, who guided her education. She and her sister were at the center of the Bloomsbury Group, a circle of artists and thinkers that included John Maynard Keynes and E. M. Forster. In 1912 she married Leonard Woolf, and in 1917 the couple started the Hogarth Press. Her novels, including Mrs. Dalloway (1925), To the Lighthouse (1927), Orlando (1928), and The Waves (1931), used a stream-of-consciousness style that lets readers follow characters' thoughts. Her essay A Room of One's Own (1929) looked at the obstacles facing women writers. She is counted among the major figures of literary modernism.
