John Hancock
Born January 23, 1737
American merchant and patriot who led the Continental Congress and was the first to sign the Declaration of Independence.
John Hancock was born in Braintree, Massachusetts, in the town now called Quincy. He graduated from Harvard College in 1754 and later took over his uncle's prosperous Boston trading business, which imported goods from Europe. He entered politics in the 1760s and won a seat in the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1766. As president of the Continental Congress from 1775 to 1777, he became the first person to sign the Declaration of Independence, writing his name in large, bold letters. He later presided over the Massachusetts convention of 1788 on the U.S. Constitution. He also served as the first governor of the state of Massachusetts, beginning in 1780.

Édouard Manet
Born January 23, 1832
French painter whose bold scenes of modern Paris life, like Olympia, paved the way for Impressionism.
Édouard Manet was a French painter born in Paris, the son of a high-ranking official in the Ministry of Justice. He trained under the painter Thomas Couture in the 1850s, but he learned even more by studying the Old Masters at the Louvre, especially Spanish artists such as Velázquez. Manet chose to paint everyday people and scenes from his own time, and he broke with traditional techniques. His Luncheon on the Grass appeared at the Salon des Refusés in 1863, and his Olympia, painted the same year, shocked many viewers. Critics attacked his work, but younger artists who later formed the Impressionist group admired him. His late masterpiece is A Bar at the Folies-Bergère (1882).

Chita Rivera
Born January 23, 1933
American Broadway dancer, singer, and actress famed for roles in West Side Story, Chicago, and Kiss of the Spider Woman.
Chita Rivera, born Dolores Conchita Figueroa del Rivero in Washington, D.C., loved performing from childhood. At seventeen she won a scholarship to George Balanchine's School of American Ballet in New York City. She became a Broadway star with her high-energy dancing and singing, and her role as Anita in West Side Story became closely tied to her name. She also played Rosie in Bye Bye Birdie (1959) and Velma Kelly in the original Chicago (1975). She won Tony Awards for The Rink, a show created for her, and for Kiss of the Spider Woman. Her national honors included the Kennedy Center Honors in 2002 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009.
