Born January 24, 1862
American novelist of New York high society and the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.
Edith Wharton, born Edith Newbold Jones, came from the wealthy New York society that she later portrayed in her fiction. A governess taught her at home, and she read widely in her father's library. She also spent long stretches of her childhood in France, Germany, and Italy, where she learned languages and developed a love of art and architecture. As a teenager she quietly published a small book of poems called Verses. Her best-known novels are The House of Mirth (1905), Ethan Frome (1911), and The Age of Innocence (1920). The Age of Innocence made her the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Over about forty years she wrote more than forty books, including works on gardens, interior design, and travel.

Mary Lou Retton
Born January 24, 1968
American gymnast who became the first American to win the Olympic individual all-around gold, at the 1984 Los Angeles Games.
Mary Lou Retton is an American gymnast from Fairmont, West Virginia. She trained in Houston with coaches Bela and Marta Karolyi, who had earlier worked with Nadia Comaneci. At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, she scored perfect 10s on the floor exercise and the vault and edged Romania's Ecaterina Szabo by just 0.05 points. That win made her the first American ever to take the Olympic individual all-around gold. She left Los Angeles with five medals: gold in the all-around, silver in the vault and team event, and bronze on the uneven bars and floor exercise. She later worked in television and was inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 1997.
