Michelangelo
Born March 6, 1475
Italian Renaissance sculptor, painter, and architect who created David, the Pietà, and the Sistine Chapel ceiling.
Michelangelo was an Italian artist born in Caprese, near Florence. As a teenager he trained with the painter Domenico Ghirlandaio and then studied sculpture in the garden of Lorenzo de' Medici. He carved the Pietà, now in St. Peter's Basilica, and the giant marble statue David, finished in 1504. From 1508 to 1512 he painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome, including the well-known Creation of Adam, and he later added The Last Judgment to the chapel's altar wall. In his later years he served as architect of the dome of St. Peter's Basilica. He also wrote poems and letters. His work had an enormous impact on Western art.

Elizabeth Barrett Browning
Born March 6, 1806
English Victorian poet famous for Sonnets from the Portuguese and the verse novel Aurora Leigh.
Elizabeth Barrett Browning was an English poet born near Durham. Her 1844 collection Poems was warmly received and caught the attention of the poet Robert Browning. The two exchanged hundreds of letters and married in secret in 1846, against her father's wishes. The couple settled in Florence, Italy, where their son was born. Her Sonnets from the Portuguese, published in 1850, became one of the best-known collections of love poems in English. She also wrote Aurora Leigh, a long novel in verse, and political poems such as Casa Guidi Windows, which supported Italian unification. Her writing spoke out against injustices including slavery and child labor.
