Alexander Graham Bell
Born March 3, 1847
Scottish-born inventor and teacher of the deaf who patented the telephone in 1876 and helped build National Geographic.
Alexander Graham Bell was an inventor and teacher born in Edinburgh, Scotland. His father taught elocution, and both his mother and his wife were deaf, which shaped his lifelong work in deaf education. His family moved to Ontario, Canada, in 1870, and Bell later carried out his research in Boston. In 1876 he received a U.S. patent for the telephone and transmitted the famous words "Mr. Watson, come here – I want to see you." The Bell Telephone Company was organized the next year. He later set up the Volta Laboratory in Washington, D.C., experimented with kites, aircraft, and hydrofoils, and served as president of the National Geographic Society.
