Gioachino Rossini
Born February 29, 1792
Italian composer of popular operas including The Barber of Seville, Cinderella, and William Tell.
Gioachino Rossini was an Italian composer born in Pesaro. He became famous for his operas, especially lively comic ones, and wrote 34 operas in all. After early hits in Venice and Milan, he became a leading figure at the San Carlo opera house in Naples. His best-known works include Tancredi (1813), The Barber of Seville (1816), Cinderella (La Cenerentola, 1817), and Semiramide (1823). He later moved to Paris, where he directed the Italian Opera. William Tell (1829), which he saw as his finest, was his final opera, and he largely stopped writing for the stage after it. Rossini changed Italian opera by using more singing in place of long spoken-style passages and by adding new instruments to the orchestra.

Herman Hollerith
Born February 29, 1860
American inventor of the punched-card tabulating machine whose company eventually became part of IBM.
Herman Hollerith was an American inventor born in Buffalo, New York. After graduating from Columbia University's School of Mines in 1879, he went to work for the U.S. Census Office. Counting the 1880 census by hand had taken about seven years, so Hollerith built an electric tabulating machine that read data from punched cards. He filed his first patent in 1884, and his system won a public test in 1888. It was then used for the 1890 census, which was counted far faster than before. In 1896 he founded the Tabulating Machine Company. Through a 1911 merger it became part of the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company, renamed IBM in 1924, and his work laid groundwork for modern data processing.
