American director and former child actor who played Opie and Richie Cunningham, later winning Oscars for A Beautiful Mind.
Ron Howard is an American filmmaker from Duncan, Oklahoma, whose parents both worked as actors. He became a familiar face as a boy playing Opie Taylor on The Andy Griffith Show, which began in 1960, and later starred as Richie Cunningham on the sitcom Happy Days from 1974 to 1980. While still acting, he studied film at USC and moved into directing, making hits such as Splash, Cocoon, Parenthood, and Apollo 13. In 1986 he co-founded Imagine Entertainment with producer Brian Grazer. Their film A Beautiful Mind won Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Director. Howard has also produced television shows, including Arrested Development.

Harry Belafonte was a New York City-born singer, actor, and activist who brought Caribbean folk music to a huge American audience. Nicknamed the "King of Calypso," he scored hits with "Day-O (Banana Boat Song)" and "Jamaica Farewell," and his album Calypso became the first LP to sell more than a million copies. He won a Tony Award for a Broadway revue and an Emmy for the TV special Tonight with Belafonte. On screen he appeared in films such as Carmen Jones and Island in the Sun. Belafonte was a close friend of Martin Luther King Jr. and a supporter of the civil rights movement, and he later served as a UNICEF goodwill ambassador.

American novelist and essayist whose acclaimed novel Invisible Man explored race and identity in America.
Ralph Ellison was an American writer from Oklahoma City. He first studied music at Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, hoping to compose symphonies, before moving to New York in 1936. There he worked for the Federal Writers Program and was encouraged by writers such as Richard Wright and Langston Hughes. His only novel published during his lifetime, Invisible Man (1952), follows a Black narrator facing racism and questions of identity. It won the National Book Award in 1953, making Ellison the first Black author to receive that prize. He also wrote essay collections, including Shadow and Act, and his unfinished second novel was later released as Juneteenth.
