John Steinbeck
Born February 27, 1902
American novelist and Nobel laureate who wrote The Grapes of Wrath, Of Mice and Men, and East of Eden.
John Steinbeck was an American author from Salinas, California, often called the classic California writer. He attended Stanford University but left without a degree to pursue writing. His fiction focused on farm laborers, migrant workers, and everyday people, treating them with warmth, humor, and a sharp eye for social and economic unfairness. His best-known books include Of Mice and Men, The Grapes of Wrath, which follows a family forced to move from Oklahoma to California, The Pearl (1947), and East of Eden (1952). He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1940. He also worked as a wartime correspondent and wrote essays about American life. In 1962 he received the Nobel Prize in Literature for writing that combined sympathetic humor with keen social perception.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Born February 27, 1807
American poet and Harvard professor who wrote Paul Revere's Ride, Evangeline, and The Song of Hiawatha.
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was an American poet born in Portland, Maine, which was then part of Massachusetts. After graduating from Bowdoin College, he spent three years in Europe studying languages. He returned to teach modern languages at Bowdoin and in 1836 became a professor at Harvard University. His poetry collections and long story poems made him enormously popular in the United States and abroad. His best-known works include Voices of the Night (1839), Evangeline (1847), The Song of Hiawatha (1855), The Courtship of Miles Standish (1858), Paul Revere's Ride, and Tales of a Wayside Inn (1863). He also translated Dante's Divine Comedy into English. His poems helped shape how Americans pictured their own history.
