Victor Hugo
Born February 26, 1802
French Romantic poet, novelist, and playwright who wrote Les Misérables and The Hunchback of Notre-Dame.
Victor Hugo was a French writer born in Besançon who became a leading voice of the Romantic movement in France. He published his first collection of poems in 1821 and by the 1840s was one of the most celebrated literary figures in the country. His novel Notre-Dame de Paris (1831), known in English as The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, won wide fame, and it was followed years later by Les Misérables (1862). His writing joined bold Romantic style with sharp criticism of social injustice. He was elected to the French Academy in 1841 and was also active in politics. After a coup in 1851, he left France and lived abroad for many years, returning home in 1870.

Levi Strauss
Born February 26, 1829
German-born American businessman whose San Francisco company patented riveted work pants, creating the modern blue jeans.
Levi Strauss was a businessman born in Buttenheim, Bavaria, in what is now Germany. As a teenager he moved to the United States and joined his brothers' dry goods business in New York City. In 1853, during the California Gold Rush, he went to San Francisco and started his own wholesale dry goods company, Levi Strauss & Co., supplying stores across the West. In the early 1870s, a Nevada tailor named Jacob Davis came to him with the idea of strengthening work pants with metal rivets. The two men received a patent on May 20, 1873. The sturdy pants, later made from blue denim, became what we now call jeans. Strauss also gave generously to charity, including funding scholarships at the University of California.

Buffalo Bill
Born February 26, 1846
American frontier scout and showman whose touring Buffalo Bill's Wild West brought the American West to audiences in the US and Europe.
William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody was an American frontiersman and entertainer born in Iowa. As a teenager he rode for the Pony Express, and he later served in the Civil War. Starting in 1867, he hunted bison to feed railroad construction crews, which earned him his famous nickname. From 1868 he worked as a civilian scout for the U.S. Army, becoming chief of scouts for the Fifth Cavalry, and in 1872 he received the Medal of Honor. That same year he began acting in Western stage plays. In 1883 he launched Buffalo Bill's Wild West, a traveling show of riding, sharpshooting, and frontier scenes that featured Annie Oakley and toured America and Europe. In 1894 he also began developing the Wyoming town that carries his name.
