Famous people born on March 5
Rex Harrison
Born March 5, 1908
English stage and screen actor who won an Academy Award playing Professor Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady.
Rex Harrison was an English actor born in Huyton, Lancashire. He made his London stage debut in 1930 and became known for polished, witty roles on stage and screen. His films included Blithe Spirit, Anna and the King of Siam, Cleopatra, in which he played Julius Caesar, and Doctor Dolittle. During World War II he served as a flight lieutenant in the Royal Air Force. His most famous role was Professor Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady, which he played on Broadway starting in 1956 and in the 1964 film. Because his singing voice was limited, he half spoke his songs. The film role won him the Academy Award for best actor, and he was knighted in 1989.

Daniel Kahneman
Born March 5, 1934
Israeli-born psychologist who won the Nobel Prize in Economics for research on human judgment and decision-making.
Daniel Kahneman was a psychologist born in Tel Aviv. He studied psychology at Hebrew University in Jerusalem and earned his doctorate at the University of California, Berkeley. Starting in the late 1960s, he worked with fellow psychologist Amos Tversky to develop prospect theory, which showed that people often rely on mental shortcuts instead of careful probability math when making uncertain choices. In 1993 he became the Eugene Higgins Professor of Psychology at Princeton University. He received the 2002 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences for bringing insights from psychology into economics. His 2011 book Thinking, Fast and Slow became a bestseller, and in 2013 he received the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Gerardus Mercator
Born March 5, 1512
Flemish mapmaker whose 1569 world map introduced the Mercator projection and who popularized the word "atlas."
Gerardus Mercator was a mapmaker born in Rupelmonde, Flanders, in what is now Belgium. After earning a degree from the University of Louvain in 1532, he studied mathematics, geography, and astronomy with Gemma Frisius and learned engraving, which proved vital for making maps. He built globes and scientific instruments for important patrons, including Emperor Charles V. In 1552 he moved to Duisburg, Germany, and set up a successful map workshop. There he created his famous 1569 world map using what is now called the Mercator projection. Its straight grid lines let sailors steer a steady compass course over long distances. Mercator also introduced the word "atlas" for a bound collection of maps.
