Born March 7, 1875
French composer of Boléro and Daphnis et Chloé, admired for his polished craftsmanship and colorful orchestral writing.
Maurice Ravel was a French composer born in the Basque town of Ciboure, though his family moved to Paris when he was a baby. He started music lessons at age seven and later studied at the Paris Conservatory with Gabriel Fauré. Often linked with musical Impressionism, Ravel was praised for careful craftsmanship and elegant form. His best-known pieces include Pavane for a Dead Princess, the ballet Daphnis et Chloé, La Valse, the opera The Child and the Enchantments, and Boléro, written in 1928. Piet Mondrian
Born March 7, 1872
Dutch painter who helped found De Stijl and created famous abstract grids of black lines and primary colors.
Piet Mondrian was a Dutch painter and a leading pioneer of abstract art. Born Pieter Cornelis Mondriaan in Amersfoort, he first trained to teach at his father's urging before turning fully to painting. His early work drew on Post-Impressionism, and time in Paris brought him into contact with Cubism. In 1917 he helped launch De Stijl, a Dutch magazine and movement, and he developed a style he called Neoplasticism, built only from straight lines, right angles, the primary colors, and black, white, and gray. After living in London, he moved to New York in 1940, where the city's energy and jazz inspired works such as Broadway Boogie-Woogie.
