Yuri Gagarin
Born March 9, 1934
Soviet cosmonaut who became the first human to travel into space, orbiting Earth aboard Vostok 1 in 1961.
Yuri Gagarin was a Soviet pilot and cosmonaut who became the first person to fly in space. The son of a carpenter on a collective farm near Gzhatsk, Russia, he trained in a foundry trade, then studied at a technical school, where he took flying lessons at an aviation club. He graduated from air force cadet school in 1957, and in 1960 he was picked for cosmonaut training. On April 12, 1961, he launched aboard Vostok 1 and circled Earth once in about 108 minutes. The flight made him famous around the world. He was named a Hero of the Soviet Union and later helped train other cosmonauts. His hometown was renamed Gagarin in his honor.

Bobby Fischer
Born March 9, 1943
American chess grandmaster who became world champion in 1972 by defeating the Soviet Union's Boris Spassky.
Bobby Fischer was an American chess player born in Chicago. A prodigy, he earned the grandmaster title in 1958 at age 15, a record at the time. His bold style and brilliant games drew the American public's attention to chess. In 1972 he faced Soviet champion Boris Spassky in Reykjavik, Iceland, in a match watched closely during the Cold War. Fischer won and became the world chess champion, the only American to hold the title. Beating a Soviet champion at the height of the Cold War made him a national figure and gave chess a big boost in popularity across the United States. He gave up the title in 1975 rather than play challenger Anatoly Karpov.
