Percy Lavon Julian
Born April 11, 1899
African American chemist who synthesized physostigmine and developed affordable ways to make hormones such as cortisone from soybeans.
Percy Julian was born in Montgomery, Alabama, where segregated schools offered him little beyond the eighth grade. At DePauw University he took extra high school classes at night and still graduated first in his class in 1920. He later studied at Harvard and earned a Ph.D. from the University of Vienna in 1931. In 1935, back at DePauw, he achieved the total synthesis of physostigmine, a drug used for glaucoma. He then led soybean research at the Glidden Company, creating a fire-fighting foam used in World War II and lower-cost methods for making progesterone and cortisone. He later founded his own laboratory, and in 1973 he became the first African American chemist elected to the National Academy of Sciences.

He then served as secretary of state from 1921 to 1925, a period that included the Washington Naval Conference. Hughes returned to the Supreme Court as chief justice in 1930 and led it through the debates over New Deal laws until 1941.
