Paul Robeson
Born April 9, 1898
American singer, actor, and activist whose deep bass-baritone made "Ol' Man River" from Show Boat famous.
Paul Robeson grew up in Princeton, New Jersey, the son of a preacher who had once been enslaved. At Rutgers he became an All-American football player and finished at the top of his class, then earned a law degree from Columbia in 1923. Finding few doors open to Black lawyers, he turned to the stage, gaining notice in Eugene O'Neill's The Emperor Jones. His powerful voice made him a star of spirituals and of Show Boat, where he sang "Ol' Man River." In 1943 he played Othello on Broadway in a record-setting run. Robeson also spoke out against lynching and segregation, and his political views led the U.S. government to take away his passport in 1950.

Born April 9, 1921
American mathematician who became NASA's first Black female engineer and one of the women celebrated in Hidden Figures.
Mary Jackson was born in Hampton, Virginia, and graduated from Hampton Institute in 1942 with degrees that included mathematics. In 1951 she joined the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics at Langley as a member of the West Area Computing unit, a group of African American women mathematicians led by Dorothy Vaughan. She studied data from wind tunnel and flight tests, and in 1958 she became the first Black woman engineer at NASA, focusing on how air flows around aircraft. Later she managed NASA's Federal Women's Program, helping women and minorities advance in their careers. Her story was told in the 2016 book and film Hidden Figures.
