Backed by his band, the Strangers, he scored his first chart-topping single with "The Fugitive" in 1967. Many more followed, including "Branded Man," "Sing Me Back Home," "Okie from Muskogee," and "If We Make It Through December." His songs often told the stories of working-class and struggling people. James Watson
Born April 6, 1928
American molecular biologist who, with Francis Crick, worked out the double-helix structure of DNA in 1953.
James Watson was an American biologist born in Chicago, Illinois. After earning his PhD at Indiana University, he teamed up with British scientist Francis Crick. In 1953 the two proposed the double-helix model of DNA, drawing on data from Rosalind Franklin, Maurice Wilkins, and their colleagues. The model showed how genetic information is stored in living things. In 1962 Watson shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Crick and Wilkins. He wrote the textbook Molecular Biology of the Gene and the popular memoir The Double Helix (1968). Watson became director of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York in 1968 and helped guide the early years of the Human Genome Project.
