American poet and memoirist best known for I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and her 1993 inaugural poem.
Maya Angelou was born Marguerite Annie Johnson in St. Louis, Missouri, and spent much of her childhood in Stamps, Arkansas, with her grandmother. Before becoming famous as a writer, she worked as a dancer, singer, actress, journalist, and editor, and she toured Europe and Africa in a production of Porgy and Bess. Her autobiography I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings made her a major literary voice, and she followed it with several more memoirs and many books of poetry. In 1993 she read "On the Pulse of Morning" at President Bill Clinton's inauguration. She taught at Wake Forest University and received the National Medal of Arts in 2000 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011.

Born April 4, 1913
American blues singer and guitarist who helped create the electric Chicago blues sound that shaped rock music.
Muddy Waters, born McKinley Morganfield in rural Mississippi, grew up playing the Delta blues. Folklorist Alan Lomax first recorded him for the Library of Congress. In 1943 he moved to Chicago, and after getting an electric guitar he blended the country blues of Mississippi with the louder sound of the city. His career took off with Chess Records, where he recorded classics such as "I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man," "Got My Mojo Working," and "Rollin' Stone." That last song inspired the names of both a major rock band and a music magazine. Many British and American rock musicians named him as a key influence. He won six Grammy Awards and entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.
