Russian composer and piano virtuoso famous for his piano concertos and Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini.
Sergei Rachmaninoff was a Russian composer, pianist, and conductor, often seen as the last major figure of Russian Romantic music. Born on a family estate in northern Russia, he became one of the leading piano virtuosos of his era. His best-known works include four piano concertos, especially the Second and Third, three symphonies, the Prelude in C-sharp minor, Vocalise, and the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini (1934). He first toured the United States as a pianist in 1909, which made him popular with American audiences. After the Russian Revolution, he left Russia in December 1917 and settled in the U.S. in 1918. He spent his later years performing widely and composing works such as the Symphonic Dances.

American actress and singer who starred in Singin' in the Rain and The Unsinkable Molly Brown.
Debbie Reynolds was an American actress and singer born Mary Frances Reynolds in El Paso, Texas. Her family moved to Southern California when she was seven. After she was named Miss Burbank in 1948, she earned a film contract and soon moved to MGM, where she became a musical star. At 19 she danced and sang alongside Gene Kelly and Donald O'Connor in Singin' in the Rain (1952). Her title role in The Unsinkable Molly Brown (1964) brought her an Academy Award nomination. She also performed in Las Vegas and on Broadway, where she earned a Tony nomination for Irene. Her children were actress and writer Carrie Fisher and filmmaker Todd Fisher. She received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for her charity work.

Abraham Maslow

American psychologist who created the hierarchy of needs and helped found humanistic psychology.
Abraham Maslow was an American psychologist from Brooklyn, New York, and the oldest of seven children of Jewish immigrants from Russia. He earned his bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in psychology at the University of Wisconsin. He taught at Brooklyn College and then chaired the psychology department at Brandeis University from 1951 to 1969. Maslow was a leader of humanistic psychology, which focuses on personal growth rather than only on problems. He is best known for his hierarchy of needs, which ranks human needs from basic ones like food and safety up through love, esteem, and finally self-actualization, or reaching one's full potential. His books include Motivation and Personality (1954) and Toward a Psychology of Being (1962).
