Hans Christian Andersen
Born April 2, 1805
Danish author whose fairy tales, including The Little Mermaid and The Ugly Duckling, became world classics.
Hans Christian Andersen was a Danish writer born to a poor family in Odense. In 1819 he went to Copenhagen hoping to become an actor, but with help from a patron named Jonas Collin he returned to school and turned to writing. His first booklet of fairy tales appeared in 1835 and included "The Tinderbox" and "The Princess and the Pea." Over time, stories such as "The Ugly Duckling," "The Little Mermaid," and "The Snow Queen" became beloved classics, and English translations after 1845 spread his fame worldwide. Andersen also wrote plays, novels, poems, and travel books, and he traveled widely across Europe, Asia Minor, and Africa. He was friends with Charles Dickens.

Marvin Gaye
Born April 2, 1939
American soul singer and songwriter known as the "Prince of Soul," famous for What's Going On and Sexual Healing.
Marvin Gaye was an American soul singer, songwriter, and producer from Washington, D.C., often called the "Prince of Soul." He joined Berry Gordy's Motown Records, where he first worked as a session drummer before launching a solo career with hits like "Hitch Hike" in 1962. His recording of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" became Motown's top-selling single of the 1960s, and he also recorded popular duets with Tammi Terrell. His 1971 album What's Going On addressed war and social unrest and helped bring in an era when artists controlled their own music. Later hits included "Let's Get It On" and "Sexual Healing," which earned him his first Grammy Awards. He entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.

On screen he became known for playing many different characters, especially in classic Ealing comedies such as Kind Hearts and Coronets, The Lavender Hill Mob, and The Ladykillers. He also worked often with director David Lean, appearing in Great Expectations and Oliver Twist. For The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957) he won the Academy Award for best actor.
