Joseph Pulitzer
Born April 10, 1847
Hungarian-born American newspaper publisher of the New York World whose will created the Pulitzer Prizes.
Joseph Pulitzer was born in Mako, Hungary, and came to the United States as a young man, serving in the Union Army during the Civil War. Settling in St. Louis, he educated himself at a library and got his start at a German-language newspaper. In 1878 he gained control of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, and in 1883 he bought the struggling New York World. Using investigative reporting and bold methods to win readers, he turned the World into the largest newspaper in the nation and helped shape the modern newspaper. His will funded a journalism school at Columbia University, which opened in 1912, and the Pulitzer Prizes, first given in 1917.

John Madden
Born April 10, 1936
Hall of Fame NFL coach who led the Oakland Raiders to a Super Bowl title, then became a beloved TV analyst.
John Madden was born in Minnesota and hoped to play pro football, but an injury at a Philadelphia Eagles training camp sent him into coaching instead. The Oakland Raiders made him head coach in 1969, when he was one of the youngest in league history. Over ten seasons his teams went 112-39-7, never had a losing year, and won seven division titles. In the 1976 season the Raiders went 13-1 and beat the Minnesota Vikings 32-14 in Super Bowl XI. Madden then spent about three decades as a broadcaster on CBS, FOX, and ABC, winning 16 Emmy Awards, and lent his name to a famous football video game. He entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006.

Director David Lean then cast him in Lawrence of Arabia (1962), a role that won him a Golden Globe and an Oscar nomination. Lean made him the lead in Doctor Zhivago (1965), a huge box office hit that brought Sharif another Golden Globe. He went on to play opposite Barbra Streisand in Funny Girl (1968). Sharif was also a devoted bridge player who wrote columns and books about the card game, and he won a French Cesar Award for Monsieur Ibrahim (2003).
