Herman Melville
Born August 1, 1819
American novelist, short-story writer, and poet best known for the sea novel Moby Dick.
Herman Melville was an American novelist, short-story writer, and poet from New York City. As a young man he went to sea on whaling and merchant ships and spent time in the South Pacific, including Tahiti. Those adventures fed his first books, Typee (1846) and Omoo (1847), which were popular with readers. His masterpiece, Moby Dick (1851), explores obsession and the human struggle against nature, but many readers of his day found it too demanding, and his popularity faded. For about twenty years he worked as a customs inspector in New York. His short novel Billy Budd was not published until 1924. Rediscovered in the 1920s, Melville is now ranked among America's major writers.

Francis Scott Key
Born August 1, 1779
American lawyer and amateur poet who wrote the words to "The Star-Spangled Banner," the U.S. national anthem.
Francis Scott Key was an American lawyer and poet from Frederick County, Maryland. He graduated from St. John's College in Annapolis, studied law with his uncle, and built a legal practice in Georgetown, appearing often before the Supreme Court. During the War of 1812, he watched the British bombard Fort McHenry in Baltimore in September 1814. Seeing the American flag still flying afterward, he wrote a poem called "Defence of Fort M'Henry" and set it to an existing tune. Renamed "The Star-Spangled Banner," the song grew popular and officially became the national anthem in 1931. Key later served as U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia from 1833 to 1841.

Jerry Garcia
Born August 1, 1942
American guitarist, singer, and songwriter who led the Grateful Dead, the famed improvisational rock band.
Jerry Garcia was an American guitarist, singer, and songwriter from San Francisco. He co-founded the Grateful Dead in 1965 and became the band's lead guitarist, a lead vocalist, and its central figure. The group pioneered improvisational psychedelic rock and was a key part of the 1967 Summer of Love. With few radio hits, the band still became one of rock's most successful touring acts, followed from city to city by fans known as Deadheads. With lyricist Robert Hunter, Garcia wrote songs such as "Truckin'," "Casey Jones," "Uncle John's Band," and "Touch of Grey." He also led the Jerry Garcia Band and played in other projects, including bluegrass group Old and in the Way.
