James Baldwin
Born August 2, 1924
American novelist and essayist whose books, including The Fire Next Time, explored race in America.
James Baldwin was an American writer from Harlem, New York. As a teenager he preached in a small church while attending DeWitt Clinton High School in the Bronx. In 1948 he moved to Paris, and he later divided his time between France and the United States. His first novel, Go Tell It on the Mountain, appeared in 1953, followed by the essay collection Notes of a Native Son in 1955. Other major works include Giovanni's Room, Another Country, and The Fire Next Time (1963). Through his essays on the Black experience, Baldwin became a leading voice of the civil rights movement and appeared on the cover of Time magazine in 1963.

Peter O'Toole
Born August 2, 1932
British-Irish actor who became an international star playing T.E. Lawrence in Lawrence of Arabia.
Peter O'Toole was an actor born in Leeds, England, who identified strongly with his Irish roots. He worked as a young newspaper reporter, served in the Royal Navy, and then trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. He sharpened his craft with the Bristol Old Vic and played Hamlet in the National Theatre's first production in 1963. His role as T.E. Lawrence in Lawrence of Arabia (1962) made him a worldwide star. He went on to earn eight Academy Award nominations for films including Becket, The Lion in Winter, Goodbye, Mr. Chips, My Favorite Year, and Venus. He received an honorary Oscar in 2003 and an Emmy for the miniseries Joan of Arc.

Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi
Born August 2, 1834
French sculptor who designed the Statue of Liberty, France's gift of friendship to the United States.
Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi was a French sculptor from Colmar in the Alsace region. He moved to Paris as a boy, studied at the Lycée Louis-le-Grand, and explored architecture and painting before turning to sculpture. At about twenty he finished a bronze statue of General Jean Rapp for his hometown. A trip to Egypt, where he saw giant ancient statues, shaped his love of large-scale works. Inspired by scholar Édouard de Laboulaye's idea of a gift celebrating friendship between France and America, he designed the Statue of Liberty, chose its island site in New York Harbor, and oversaw its construction. It was dedicated in 1886. He also created the huge Lion of Belfort in France.
