Alexis de Tocqueville
Born July 29, 1805
French political thinker and historian best known for Democracy in America, his classic study of early American society.
Alexis de Tocqueville was a French political scientist, historian, and politician from Paris. In 1831 and 1832 he spent about nine months traveling across the United States with his friend Gustave de Beaumont, officially to look into prison reform. Their interviews and observations became the basis for Democracy in America, published in two parts in 1835 and 1840. The book examined how American democracy, social life, and institutions worked, and it has had a lasting influence on how people think about democracy. Back in France, Tocqueville sat in the Chamber of Deputies from 1839 to 1848 and briefly served as foreign minister in 1849. He later wrote The Old Regime and the Revolution (1856), a study of France before and during its revolution.
