Beatrix Potter
Born July 28, 1866
English author and illustrator who created The Tale of Peter Rabbit and other beloved children's books.
Beatrix Potter was an English writer and artist born in South Kensington, London. She grew up mostly alone, and family holidays in Scotland and the Lake District gave her a lifelong love of animals and nature. She painted watercolors and even studied fungi seriously, presenting research to the Linnean Society in 1897. Her famous rabbit story began as an illustrated letter written to a child. She first printed The Tale of Peter Rabbit herself in 1901, and Frederick Warne & Company published it in 1902. More small books followed, such as The Tailor of Gloucester, Squirrel Nutkin, and Benjamin Bunny. She bought Hill Top farm in 1905, married William Heelis in 1913, raised sheep, and left her land to the National Trust.

Jim Davis
Born July 28, 1945
American cartoonist who created Garfield, the lasagna-loving cat of the world-famous comic strip.
Jim Davis is an American cartoonist born near Marion, Indiana, who grew up on a farm full of animals. He studied art and business at Ball State University in Muncie. After college he worked as an assistant to Tom Ryan, the cartoonist behind Tumbleweeds. His first strip idea, Gnorm Gnat, about a funny insect, did not catch on with newspapers. Noticing that few comics starred cats, he created Garfield, a chubby, lazy cat who loves lasagna. The strip debuted on June 19, 1978, in 41 newspapers and grew into one of the most widely syndicated comics in the world. Davis founded Paws, Inc. to manage Garfield's books, TV shows, movies, and merchandise, and he has won the Reuben Award and several Emmy Awards.
