Rosalind Franklin
Born July 25, 1920
British chemist whose X-ray images of DNA, including the famous Photo 51, helped reveal its double-helix structure.
Rosalind Franklin was a British chemist and expert in X-ray crystallography, a method that uses X-rays to study the structure of molecules. Born in London, she studied chemistry at Newnham College, Cambridge, and earned a PhD for research on coal. In Paris in the late 1940s, she learned X-ray diffraction methods. In 1951 she joined King's College London, where she and student Raymond Gosling identified two forms of DNA and made Photo 51, a sharp X-ray image of the molecule. Her images and measurements gave key evidence for the double-helix model that James Watson and Francis Crick published in 1953. She later moved to Birkbeck College, where she studied viruses such as tobacco mosaic virus.
