Aretha Franklin was an American singer from Memphis, Tennessee, who became known around the world as the Queen of Soul. Her father was the Baptist preacher C.L. Franklin, and she first learned to sing in church, performing gospel music as a young girl. She recorded for Columbia Records before moving to Atlantic Records in 1966, where her career took off. Hits such as "Respect," "Think," "Chain of Fools," and "I Say a Little Prayer" made her a star, and her style mixed gospel with rhythm and blues. In 1987 she became the first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2005 and sang at President Barack Obama's 2009 inauguration.

Elton John is a British singer, pianist, and songwriter, born Reginald Kenneth Dwight in Pinner, near London. He taught himself piano as a small child and won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music at age 11. In the late 1960s he teamed up with lyricist Bernie Taupin, and their partnership produced his breakthrough song "Your Song" in 1970. Later hits include "Rocket Man," "Bennie and the Jets," and "Philadelphia Freedom," and the 1973 album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. He also wrote music for The Lion King, winning a Grammy for "Can You Feel the Love Tonight," and for the Broadway musical Aida. He entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 and was knighted in 1998.

Gloria Steinem was an American journalist and activist who became one of the best-known leaders of the women's movement. Born in Toledo, Ohio, she graduated from Smith College in 1956 and then studied in India on a fellowship. As a freelance writer in New York, she drew national attention in 1963 with an undercover report on working as a Bunny at a Playboy Club. She helped launch New York magazine in 1968, and in 1971 she co-founded Ms., a magazine that covered issues from a feminist point of view. She also helped start groups such as the National Women's Political Caucus. Her books include Revolution from Within and My Life on the Road. In 2013 she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
