Born March 27, 1845
German physicist who discovered X-rays in 1895 and received the first Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901.
Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen was a German physicist whose discovery of X-rays changed science and medicine. Born in Lennep, Germany, he moved with his family to the Netherlands at age three. He studied at the Polytechnic in Zurich, where he earned his doctorate in 1869, and later taught at universities including Strasbourg, Giessen, Würzburg, and Munich. On November 8, 1895, while experimenting with electric discharges in tubes, he noticed a new kind of ray that could pass through solid objects. Because he did not know what the rays were, he called them X-rays, and one of his first images showed the bones in his wife's hand. In 1901 he was awarded the very first Nobel Prize in Physics.
