Famous people born on January 8
Elvis Presley
Born January 8, 1935
American singer and actor known as the King of Rock 'n' Roll, whose 1950s hits transformed popular music.
Elvis Presley was born in Tupelo, Mississippi, and moved with his family to Memphis, Tennessee, in 1948. His sound mixed country and pop with the gospel he heard in church and the rhythm and blues of Beale Street. In 1954 he began recording at Sun Records in Memphis with producer Sam Phillips, and in late 1955 he signed with RCA Victor. By 1956 he was an international star, and he came to be called the King of Rock 'n' Roll. Presley starred in 33 films, including Jailhouse Rock (1957), and served in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1960. A 1968 television special revived his career, and he later became famous for his long Las Vegas engagements. His Memphis home, Graceland, remains closely tied to his legacy.

Stephen Hawking
Born January 8, 1942
English theoretical physicist known for his work on black holes and the bestselling book A Brief History of Time.
Stephen Hawking was born in Oxford, England. He earned a first-class degree in natural science at University College, Oxford, and then completed a PhD at Cambridge University, where he spent his career. Working with Roger Penrose, he showed that Einstein's general theory of relativity implied that space and time began with the Big Bang. Hawking also proposed that black holes are not completely black but give off radiation, now known as Hawking radiation. He held the Lucasian Professorship of Mathematics at Cambridge. His 1988 book A Brief History of Time became an international bestseller and introduced millions of readers to modern cosmology. His honors included the Copley Medal in 2006 and the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009.

David Bowie
Born January 8, 1947
English singer, songwriter, and actor famed for constant reinvention, from Ziggy Stardust to Let's Dance.
David Bowie was born David Robert Jones in London. He had his first hit with Space Oddity in 1969, and his 1972 album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars made him a leading figure of glam rock. Bowie kept changing his style, moving to the soul-influenced Young Americans (1975), the experimental albums Low and Heroes (1977), and the pop success Let's Dance (1983). His songs include Changes, Fame, Modern Love, and Under Pressure. He also acted on stage and in films such as The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976). Bowie entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 and the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2005, and he received a Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award in 2006.
