J. D. Salinger
Born January 1, 1919
American author whose 1951 novel The Catcher in the Rye won devoted readers among postwar college students.
Jerome David Salinger was an American writer from Manhattan, New York. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, landing at Utah Beach during the Normandy invasion and later taking part in the Battle of the Bulge. His short stories appeared regularly in The New Yorker. In 1951 he published The Catcher in the Rye, a novel that drew strong praise and a loyal following, especially among college students of the postwar years. He followed it with Nine Stories in 1953 and Franny and Zooey in 1961. In 1953 he moved to a quiet property in Cornish, New Hampshire, where he lived a famously private life and published very little new work.

Betsy Ross
Born January 1, 1752
American upholsterer and flag maker who, according to family tradition, sewed the first flag of the United States.
Betsy Ross, born Elizabeth Griscom in Gloucester City, New Jersey, grew up in a Quaker family and learned sewing through school and an apprenticeship. She became an upholsterer, a trade that handled many kinds of sewing work, including flags. Family stories say that in late May or early June of 1776 she met with George Washington, George Ross, and Robert Morris, and that this meeting led to the sewing of the first American flag. Historians note there is no firm evidence for the story, but records do show she made flags for the navy. Ross was married three times and kept her upholstery business running until 1827.

Hank Greenberg
Born January 1, 1911
Hall of Fame first baseman and slugger for the Detroit Tigers who won two American League MVP awards.
Hank Greenberg was an American baseball player from New York City who starred mainly as a first baseman for the Detroit Tigers. He won the American League Most Valuable Player award in 1935, when he drove in 168 runs, and again in 1940, becoming the first player to earn the honor at two different positions. Greenberg gave more than four years of his prime to military service during World War II. After returning in 1945, he helped the Tigers win the World Series. He finished his playing days with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1947 with 331 career home runs, later worked as general manager of the Cleveland Indians and Chicago White Sox, and entered the Hall of Fame in 1956.
