Isaac Newton
Born January 4, 1643
English physicist and mathematician who described the laws of motion and universal gravitation.
Isaac Newton was an English scientist and mathematician from Woolsthorpe, Lincolnshire. He entered Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1661 and became a professor of mathematics there in 1669. His book Principia (1687) set out three laws of motion and the law of universal gravitation, ideas that shaped physics for more than two centuries. He also developed calculus, studied light with prisms, and built a reflecting telescope in 1668; his findings on light appeared in Opticks (1704). Newton later served as warden and then master of the Royal Mint, became president of the Royal Society in 1703, and was knighted in 1705.

Born January 4, 1809
French teacher who invented braille, the raised-dot reading and writing system used by blind people worldwide.
Louis Braille was a French teacher and inventor from Coupvray, a village near Paris. He lost his sight at age three, and in 1819 he won a scholarship to the National Institute for Blind Children in Paris. There he learned of a dot-based code devised by Charles Barbier. At about 15, Braille reshaped that idea into a simpler system built on six dots in different patterns, which readers could feel with their fingertips. He published an explanation of his method in 1829 and later adapted it for writing music. Braille taught at the institute from 1826 and was also a skilled organist. His system is still widely used today.

Don Shula
Born January 4, 1930
American football coach who won more NFL games than any other and led the Miami Dolphins' perfect 1972 season.
Don Shula was an American football coach from Ohio. After playing at John Carroll University, he spent seven seasons as an NFL defensive back. In 1963 the Baltimore Colts made him the youngest head coach in league history, and he led them until 1969. He then coached the Miami Dolphins from 1970 to 1995. His 1972 Dolphins capped the only perfect season in NFL history with a win in Super Bowl VII, and Miami won Super Bowl VIII the next season. Over 33 seasons Shula compiled a 347-173-6 record, passing George Halas for the most wins. He entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1997.
