Henri Matisse
Born December 31, 1869
French painter who led the Fauvist movement and became famous for bold color and his late paper cut-outs.
Henri Matisse was a French artist born in Le Cateau in northern France. He first studied law in Paris, then turned to art full-time in 1891 and trained under painters such as Gustave Moreau. At the 1905 Salon d'Automne, critics mocked him and his circle as "les fauves," or "wild beasts," for their daring color, and his portrait Woman with the Hat helped define the style. Matisse remained devoted to expressive color in paintings like The Red Studio and The Dance, and he was also admired for his prints and drawings. In his later years he made vivid works from cut colored paper and designed the Chapel of the Rosary in Vence, from its windows to its vestments.

George Marshall
Born December 31, 1880
U.S. Army general and statesman who led the Army in World War II and championed the Marshall Plan.
George C. Marshall was an American soldier and statesman born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania. After graduating from the Virginia Military Institute in 1901, he built a long Army career. President Franklin Roosevelt named him Army chief of staff in 1939, and he held that post through World War II, overseeing the growth and supply of a force of more than eight million soldiers. He then served as secretary of state from 1947 to 1949. In a 1947 speech at Harvard, he outlined a large aid program to help Europe rebuild, which became known as the Marshall Plan. He later served as secretary of defense during the Korean War and received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1953, the only career U.S. Army officer to do so.

Born December 31, 1995
American gymnast who won Olympic all-around gold in 2012 and team gold at both the 2012 and 2016 Games.
Gabby Douglas is an American gymnast from Virginia Beach, Virginia. At 14 she moved to West Des Moines, Iowa, to train with coach Liang Chow, and her soaring work on the uneven bars led national team coordinator Martha Karolyi to nickname her "the Flying Squirrel." She helped the U.S. win team gold at the 2011 World Championships. At the 2012 London Olympics, she won gold in both the team and individual all-around events, becoming the first African American to take the all-around title. She earned another team gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics as part of the "Final Five." Douglas also told her story in the 2012 autobiography Grace, Gold and Glory: My Leap of Faith.
