Sigmund Freud was an Austrian neurologist who created psychoanalysis, a method for treating mental disorders by exploring hidden thoughts and feelings. He was born in Freiberg, Moravia, in what is now the Czech Republic, and earned his medical degree from the University of Vienna in 1881. After studying in Paris with Jean-Martin Charcot, he opened a practice in Vienna in 1886. His 1900 book The Interpretation of Dreams became a cornerstone of his work. Freud introduced ideas such as the unconscious, repression, the Oedipus complex, and the id, ego, and superego. In 1938 he left Austria for London. His theories remain debated, yet they still influence psychology, literature, and the arts.
