Born May 4, 1958
American pop artist whose bold, cartoon-like figures moved from New York subway walls to murals around the world.
Keith Haring was an American artist born in Reading, Pennsylvania, and raised in nearby Kutztown, where he loved cartoons as a child. In 1978 he moved to New York City to study at the School of Visual Arts and joined the lively downtown art scene. In the early 1980s he began making quick white-chalk drawings on empty black ad panels in subway stations, sometimes dozens in a single day, and they won him a wide public following. His simple, energetic lines and figures became instantly recognizable. In 1986 he opened the Pop Shop in New York's SoHo, selling affordable items featuring his art. He painted more than 50 public murals worldwide, often working alongside children, and in 1989 he created the Keith Haring Foundation.
