Karl Marx
Born May 5, 1818
German philosopher, economist, and revolutionary who co-wrote The Communist Manifesto and wrote Das Kapital.
Karl Marx was a German philosopher, economist, and revolutionary born in Trier, the son of a lawyer. He studied law at Bonn and philosophy at Berlin, then earned a doctorate in 1841 with a study of ancient Greek thought. As a writer for the Rheinische Zeitung newspaper in Cologne, he first took up economic and social issues before the paper was shut down in 1843. In Paris he met Friedrich Engels, who became his lifelong friend and partner in writing. Together they published The Communist Manifesto in 1848, describing history as a story of class struggle. Marx later settled in London, where he researched capitalism and published Das Kapital in 1867. His ideas became the foundation of Marxism.

Born May 5, 1864
Pioneering American investigative journalist famous for her asylum exposé and her record 72-day trip around the world.
Nellie Bly was the pen name of Elizabeth Cochran, an American journalist born in Cochran's Mills, Pennsylvania. Her career began in 1885 at the Pittsburgh Dispatch after an angry letter she wrote to the editor impressed the paper. Her pen name came from a Stephen Foster song. In 1887 she joined Joseph Pulitzer's New York World and pretended to be mentally ill to get inside the asylum on Blackwell's Island. Her report, Ten Days in a Mad-House, exposed poor treatment and led to reforms. In 1889 she set out to beat the fictional journey in Jules Verne's novel and circled the globe in about 72 days. She later ran a manufacturing company and reported from Europe during World War I.
